Note: Post and Batten Spacings required for good fence performance depend on the type of livestock, the number of wires, how tight the wires are, and how much electric shock is available on the wires. The above "standard spacings" have proven to be effective for well built (with strong foundations that follow the land contour) and well maintained fences with high powered energizers (other than 8 and 10 wire fences that need not be electrified) in areas with more than twenty inches of annual rainfall. The post and/or batten spacings should be closer for less well built or maintained fences and especially for electric fences in dryer areas and areas subject to long dry seasons. Good fences have strong foundations, tight wires, and follow the land contour closely for small animal and predator control.
